Even after signing Junichi Tazawa to a two-year deal Thursday night, the Marlins are seeking another reliever and are considering both Brad Ziegler and Joe Blanton, according to Joel Sherman of The New York Post.
Sherman notes the Marlins would prefer to add Ziegler but are considering Blanton as a fallback option. SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo reported Friday that Ziegler is “hoping to decide” by the end of the day.
Blanton, 36, pitched well with the Dodgers last season, posting a 2.48 ERA and 3.33 FIP over 80.0 innings. The former starter has had success in a setup role and could be one of the next free agent relievers to sign.
The Marlins entered the Winter Meetings hoping to build a “super bullpen,” according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman, but the club left without signing any of the top three closers. However, Miami still seems open to adding relief depth to complement A.J. Ramos, Kyle Barraclough and David Phelps in the back-end of the bullpen.
