Washington already traded for catcher Derek Norris in early December, but there is “rampant speculation” throughout baseball that the Nationals will sign Matt Wieters, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
Though the Nationals added Norris, the club could still sign Wieters and move Norris in another trade, according to MASN’s Roch Kubatko. Wieters is a client of Scott Boras, who the Nationals seemingly have a good relationship with.
The market for Wieters has yet to develop, and though the Orioles were thought to be considering re-signing the free agent catcher, Baltimore signed Welington Castillo last week. Wieters might prefer to remain in the Maryland area, which could lead him to join the Nationals.
Wieters, 30, batted .243/.302/.409 with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs over 124 games with the Orioles last season. He made close to $16 million last year and is in a position to request an extensive deal. The Nationals might be in the best financial position to give him one.
