Blue Jays sign Josh Donaldson to 2-year extension

The Blue Jays have agreed to a 2-year extension with star third baseman Josh Donaldson, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. Donaldson will earn nearly $29 million over the next two seasons, according to Davidi.

Donaldson is the second All-Star to sign a two-year extension on Monday, joining Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez. The new deal does not extend Toronto's control over Donaldson, but instead provides cost certainty for the next two seasons and will allow the sides to avoid going to arbitration.

Donaldson is under team control through the 2018 season, so the sides will need to go through the arbitration process after the 2017 season if he is still a member of the Jays.

Donaldson, 30, was named American League MVP after hitting .297/.371/.568 with 41 home runs and 123 RBI in 158 games during his first season as a Jay. He will likely be in line for a monster contract when he becomes a free agent after 2018, hitting the open market heading into his age-33 season.
