Padres sign Skip Schumaker to minor-league deal

The Padres have signed free agent Skip Schumaker to a minor-league contract, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Schumaker, 36, became a free agent when the Reds bought out his club option for $250K following the conclusion of the World Series. His market seemed to be quiet for most of the season, but he will end up competing for a spot as a reserve on the Padres' roster.

Schumaker has the ability to play all three outfield positions and second base, providing an option for San Diego behind Jon Jay, Melvin Upton Jr., Matt Kemp and Cory Spangenberg. He hit just .242/.306/.336 with one homer for Cincinnati last season.

Schumaker is a veteran of 11 major-league seasons with the Cardinals (2005-12), Dodgers (2013) and Reds (2014-15), and is the owner of a lifetime .278/.337/.364 line with 28 home runs in 1,149 career games. He has appeared at at all three outfield spots and second base in every season since 2009.
