According to Evan Grant, the Rangers are still interested in acquiring a catcher, but it's not Jonathan Lucroy.
"While the Rangers have maintained interest in Lucroy all winter, the more likely target is San Diego's Derek Norris, a source said. Norris, 27, might cost a bit less in terms of prospects and comes with a lower salary ($2.9 million), a key consideration given that the club has already surpassed its projected payroll by $7 million. Norris would also be under the club's control through 2018, while Lucroy, who will make $4 million in base salary in 2016 could be a free agent after the season. There is also a club option in his current contract."
Just a couple days ago, Ken Rosenthal linked Texas to Lucroy, but said that there hadn't been any recent talks; and this recent news would make sense as to why.
As Grant notes, not only would Norris cost less in terms of actual money, but the prospect package needed to acquire him undoubtedly wouldn't be as high as it will be to get Milwaukee to part with Lucroy. While Norris isn't as good as Lucroy, he'd likely be an upgrade over Texas' current starting catcher, Robinson Chirinos; both offensively and defensively.
According to StatCorner, Norris ranked as the 9th best pitch framer in baseball, whereas Chirinos ranked 69th. It's unclear how far along these talks are, or even if they've started. But with less than three weeks until opening day, the Rangers don't have much time to waste.
