Bronson Arroyo tears labrum, leaving comeback in doubt

Nationals right-hander Bronson Arroyo is ending his comeback attempt after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder, according to Peter Gammons of MLB Network. Gammons reports that Arroyo has an 80 percent tear in the labrum, meaning he will likely retire after a 15-year career.

Arroyo, 39, signed a minor-league deal with Washington this winter and was attempting to make the club as a back-end starter or long reliever. He missed the entirety of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but was traded twice as part of salary dumps involving the Diamondbacks, Braves and Dodgers.

If this is the end for Arroyo, he exits baseball with a lifetime 145-131 record and 4.19 ERA in 15 seasons with the Pirates (2000-02), Red Sox (2003-05), Reds (2006-13) and Diamondbacks (2014). He logged more than 199 innings in nine straight seasons from 2005 to 2013, and was regarded as one of the game's most effective innings-eaters.
