The White Sox are aggressively pursuing right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, according to major-league sources. The Marlins, Blue Jays and Athletics are also interested in Gonzalez, who was placed on release waivers by the Orioles Wednesday.
Gonzalez will be on release waivers for 48 hours, meaning he will be eligible to sign as a free agent tomorrow. Any team that would claim Gonzalez off waivers would have to pay his entire $5.1 million salary for this season, so he is almost certain to hit free agency.
Gonzalez appears likely to get a minor-league deal at this point, though his strong market may push teams into giving him a guaranteed major-league deal. More teams are expected to jump in before the end of the week.
Gonzalez, 31, struggled to a 9.78 ERA this spring in 19.1 innings with the Orioles, but has been a significant contributor to the team's rotation since 2012. In four major-league seasons, he is the owner of a 39-33 record and 3.82 ERA in 101 appearances (95 starts).
