Last year, the San Diego Padres were without a first round pick. This year, they find themselves with the number eight overall selection and that creates a different task for scouting director Mark Conner and his staff. Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union Tribune spoke to Conner about the process and about who the Padres will be looking at.
Besides the No. 8 pick, the Padres will also pick at 24 and 25 in the first round, compensation picks for losing Justin Upton and Ian Kennedy. They have narrowed their list down to 15 guys that they are considering at that eight spot, and some of those 15 may even be there when they pick again just 16 spots later.
More from around the National League West:
- Behind a Clayton Kershaw complete game shutout, the Dodgers were able to snap a six-game losing streak. How did they celebrate that win? With a little dancing.
- The Rockies headlined the list of April home runs, with Nolan Arenado hitting the longest home run of the month and Trevor Story being Trevor Story.
- Diamondback players and staff read some mean tweets about their new jerseys.
- It's rare, but the Giants were able to figure out Noah Syndergaard and that starts with stealing on the base path.
