Astros trade rumors: Houston could shop Colby Rasmus, Carlos Gomez at trade deadline

If Houston continues to struggle as it sits in the bottom of the American League West, it could consider shopping Colby Rasmus and Carlos Gomez ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

When the Astros acquired Mike Fiers and Gomez last summer, they were forced to part with multiple prospects. The same was true when the Astros traded for reliever Ken Giles during the off-season.

While their minor league system remains strong, the Astros could add depth by parting with impending free agents.

Jason Castro, Scott Feldman, Doug Fister and Rasmus are all set to become free agents at the end of the season and could prove to be valuable additions to a contending club's roster.

Castro, 28, might not be as valuable now as he could be in the coming weeks. Over 37 contests this season, he is batting .220/.355/.400. He is a career .236 hitter and hasn't had much offensive success since batting .276 in 2013.

Rasmus has also had a slow start to the 2016 campaign, batting .238/.339/.442 in addition to eight home runs and 31 RBIs over 41 games.

Feldman has had a fair amount of success and could be an ideal front or middle of the rotation arm. Over 30.1 innings, he's pitched to a 3.86 ERA and 4.35 FIP.

Fister might also improve a contending rotation. Over 49.0 innings, he's posted a 4.22 ERA.

Gomez hasn't had much success to this point in 2016, and as a result, the Astros might not get much back in a potential trade. He is batting a mere. 182 over 34 contests and has yet to hit a home run.

If Gomez is able to string together a few weeks of offensive success, the Astros could consider moving him. However, that doesn't appear to be a realistic option at this point.

Houston lost several young players and could use veterans to acquire prospects this summer. But if the Astros turn things around, that might not be the case.
