Hector Olivera suspended 82 games after domestic violence investigation

Braves outfielder Hector Olivera has received an 82-game suspension for his role in an April 13 domestic dispute, according to a league announcement. Olivera's suspension is retroactive to April 30, meaning he will be eligible to return to the team on August 2.

Olivera was arrested last month in Washington, D.C. and charged with one count misdemeanor assault and battery while in the city for a series against the Nationals. He is the third player to be suspended under the league's new domestic violence policy, joining Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman (30 games) and Jose Reyes (51 games).

Olivera has been replaced in left field for Atlanta by a combination of Mallex Smith and Jeff Francoeur, so the team will likely continue to use those options until Olivera returns in August. Olivera, who was traded from the Dodgers to the Braves in a trade deadline deal last July, was thought to be one of the possible bright spots in an otherwise lousy year for the Braves before being sidelined after his arrest.

Olivera, 31, has appeared in only 30 games for Atlanta since being acquired last year. He has hit .245/.296/.378 with two home runs in that time, switching over from third base to left field this year to fill an outfield void for the Braves. Olivera is in the second year of a 6-year, $62.5 million contract that he signed with Los Angeles last May.
