AL West Notes: Joe Smith trade rumors, Rangers interested in Kyle Lohse

The latest from around the American League West.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

It appeared Kyle Lohse was drawing enough interest to be signed by a major league club before the start of the regular season, but that wasn't the case.

The former Milwaukee starter remains on the market, and both the Rangers and Angels are interested, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Andrew Heaney and Garrett Richards both have some degree of UCL damage, leaving the Angels without a pair of starters.

While the Rangers might not benefit from the depth as much as the Angels would, they could be seeking an outside option to a rotation spot, since A.J. Griffin left his start Saturday with shoulder stiffness.

More from around the AL West:

  • Joe Smith will likely be moved before the non-waiver trade deadline, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Smith has pitched to a 3.60 ERA this season and could be a valuable addition for a contender.
  • Entering 2016, the Angels' offense yielded more questions than their pitching. But that doesn't appear to be the case any more.
  • Yu Darvish tossed three innings in his most recent rehab outing.
  • The return of Danny Valencia should give the Athletics the freedom to take advantage of Chris Coghlan's versatility.
  • Houston optioned Evan Gattis to Triple-A so he can improve behind the plate.
