Andrelton Simmons to miss 6-8 weeks after thumb surgery

Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons will likely miss 6-8 weeks after tearing a thumb ligament, according to a team announcement. Simmons will go on the disabled list and will require surgery.

Simmons' injury is the latest blow for an Angels' team that has suffered its fair share of injuries so far this season, with Garrett Richards (Tommy John surgery), Andrew Heaney (left forearm), C.J. Wilson (left shoulder) and Huston Street (left oblique) also on the disabled list at this point. The Halos have been rumored to be considering a fire sale in advance of the August 1 non-waiver trade deadline, so it is unclear if Simmons' injury will have any impact on their deadline plans.

Simmons, 26, has appeared in 31 games for the Angels this season after being acquired from the Braves in an offseason trade. The defense-first shortstop has hit just .219/.246/.281 in that time, and will likely be replaced by Cliff Pennington and Rey Navarro, who are both on the 40-man roster and have experience at shortstop.
