Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel has declared free agency and is MLB ready, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com.
Gurriel and his brother, Lourdes Jr., defected from Cuba earlier this year and are looking for major league deals. It’s highly unlikely we will see either of them in a major league uniform this year, however.
Gurriel just turned 32 last Thursday and time may not be on his side. In baseball terms, that’s over-the-hill, as players typically begin their decline years following their 29th birthday. That being said, he is believed to be major league ready incumbent on some work outs and collecting some minor league at-bats. The Cuban infielder will hold private showcases for a handful of teams while looking for a contract.
Lourdes Jr., who is still just 22, has not declared free agency as of yet, also according to Sanchez.
