AL East Notes: Ike Davis joins Yankees, Matt Moore’s future

After placing four first basemen on the disabled list, the Yankees decided to give veteran Ike Davis a chance, signing him to a major league contract Sunday afternoon.

Davis, 29, didn’t have much success in Oakland last season, batting .229 to complement three home runs. He was batting .268 in Triple-A after joining the Rangers on a minor league deal during the off-season.

Things haven’t gone well for Davis the last few seasons, but if he can produce routinely as he did with the Mets, he could prove to be a valuable addition to the Yankees’ infield.

A few more fly balls in the air to right field at Yankee Stadium could easily lead to some dingers, even if the swings sometimes come at the cost of some frustrating weak contact. The more even distribution did not cut it in 2015, so Davis' motto has to be "go big or go home."

• Baltimore was not too fond of Miguel Gonzalez at the end of spring training, and as a result, the team decided to part ways with him, saving money in the process. To this point, though, it doesn’t seem that was the ideal option.

• Matt Moore was dominant before being extended by the Rays. Since then, he has struggled, and the Rays will soon be forced to determine how they want to handle the situation.

• It hasn’t been the best of starts for Eduardo Rodriguez. The Red Sox need him in the rotation, though, so he didn’t receive much of an opportunity to ease back into his starting role.

• There is still plenty of time before the non-waiver trade deadline. Regardless, the Blue Jays are not expected to buy in the coming weeks.

• Even after an inconsistent 2015 campaign, Chase Headley could still be one of the better Yankees’ signings in recent off-seasons.
