The Royals have at least inquired about the possibility of acquiring Jose Reyes, according to a report from ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. Reyes was recently designated for assignment by the Rockies, and will likely be released in the near future.
Kansas City has some interest in Reyes as an option at second base, as first reported by ESPN’s Alex Cora. Crasnick cautions that the inquiry may have just been due diligence, and that the Royals are satisfied with the performance of Whit Merrifield and Christian Colon at second base.
The Royals designated Omar Infante for assignment earlier in the week, and may search for a veteran upgrade at some point before the non-waiver trade deadline on August 1. Reyes will likely be available for a pro-rated portion of the major-league minimum once he clears release waivers and becomes a free agent.
According to reports, both the Mets and Yankees are not interested at Reyes at this point. No other suitors have been confirmed at this time.
