The Rangers have acquired third baseman Kyle Kubitza from the Angels for cash considerations, according to Rangers Executive Vice President of Communications John Blake.
Kubitza was originally drafted by the Braves in 2011 before being traded prior to the 2015 season to the Angels along with Nate Hyatt for Ricardo Sanchez. Kubitza appeared in 19 MLB games with the Angels, where he hit .194/.256/.194. Baseball America ranked Kubitza 16th overall in the organization. Kubitza was designated for assignment on June 13.
According to Blake, Kubitza has been added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.
This is telling of the Angels’ continual farm system woes. Though the organization has Yunel Escobar playing third base at the big league level and Kaleb Cowart at Triple-A Salt Lake City, only getting cash in return for Kubitza was the best they could do. And to a division rival, no less.
The Rangers are at the top of the division with a 46-25 record and a .648 winning percentage, while the Angels are near the bottom, with 31-39 as their record and a .443 win percentage. At this rate, the Angels should be making moves to rebuild, and yet, they don’t really appear to be.
