Padres outfielder Jon Jay has a broken forearm after being hit by a pitch last week, according to a report from Darren Smith of Mighty1090.com in San Diego. The timetable for Jay’s return is unknown.

Jay, 31, was considered a strong candidate to be traded before the non-waiver trade deadline on August 1, though his injury may cost the Padres a valuable trade chip. Jay had been drawing interest from many teams looking for outfield help, with the Royals, Blue Jays and Red Sox among the clubs keeping tabs on him.

If Jay is back in action before the deadline, the Padres could still look to trade him, though his value will be lessened significantly if he is still on the disabled list at the end of the month. The injury is an unfortunate one for San Diego, a club looking to trade assets like Jay in a rebuilding effort this summer.

In his first season with the Padres, Jay has hit .296/.345/.407 with 2 home runs in 68 games. He has experience at all three outfield spots, but has been used exclusively in center for the Padres so far.
