The Marlins have acquired right-hander Fernando Rodney from the Padres for right-hander Chris Paddack, as first reported by Keith Law of ESPN.com and Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan.
Miami was known to be looking for back-end bullpen help in recent weeks, reportedly considering both Rodney and Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman. Rodney will immediately slot into the team’s closer role, forming a formidable group with A.J. Ramos, Kyle Barraclough and David Phelps.
Rodney, 39, has been virtually unhittable so far this season, allowing only one earned run in 28.2 innings of work while saving 17 games. He signed a 1-year, $2 million deal with San Diego over the winter, and is under team control for next season with a $2 million option.
Rodney is a veteran of 14 major-league seasons with six different teams, and owns a lifetime 3.58 ERA while saving 253 games. He has been an All-Star twice, in 2012 and 2014
Paddack, 20, was the Marlins’ 8th-round pick in last year’s draft out of Cedar Park High School in Texas. He has been stellar in the minors over the last two years, posting a 2.18 ERA in 45.1 innings for the team’s rookie-league affiliate last year before notching a 0.95 ERA mark in six starts for Single-A Greensboro this season.
Paddack is ranked by MLB.com as Miami’s 17th-best prospect, and is praised for his projectable frame and above-average stuff.
