Red Sox place Ryan Hanigan, Blake Swihart on 15-day DL

Boston placed Ryan Hanigan and Blake Swihart on the 15-day disabled list Sunday morning, the club announced.

Hanigan left the Red Sox's win over the Blue Jays on Saturday with a neck strain. Swihart also departed early after making a catch that resulted in a collision with the left field wall. Swihart reportedly injured his ankle on the play in the seventh inning.

Hanigan, 35, hasn't produced consistently when he's had an opportunity to start this season. Over 22 contests, Hanigan is batting .186/.250/.229 in addition to 10 RBIs. He is not known to be a power hitter but has yet to hit a home run this season.

Although he hasn't produced at the plate, Hanigan has proven to be a valuable asset behind the plate. He has thrown out 32 percent of base stealers this season.

While Hanigan hasn't contributed much offensively, Swihart has had a fair amount of success in an outfield role. Over 19 contests this season, he batting .258/.365/.355 to complement five RBIs.

The Red Sox promoted Sandy Leon, who will serve as a backup to Christian Vazquez, in one of the corresponding roster moves. Outfielder Rusney Castillo was also promoted to take Swihart's spot on the roster.

Chris Young could see a significant increase in playing time with Swihart out, but Castillo will likely receive another opportunity to prove he belongs in Boston's outfield. Castillo has spent almost all of 2016 in the minors, batting .241.

In a separate series of moves, the Red Sox optioned Noe Ramirez and promoted Heath Hembree.
