Brewers select Corey Ray with 5th overall pick

With the fifth overall pick in the draft, the Brewers have selected Louisville outfielder Corey Ray. Prior to the draft all three major mocks (ESPN, BA and MLB.com) correctly had Ray going to the Brewers as the fifth overall selection.

Ray joins Brett Phillips and last year's first-round pick, Trenton Clark, as young outfield prospects for Milwaukee. The Brewers have Domingo Santana as another long-term option in the outfield, and are expected to at least consider moving veteran outfielder Ryan Braun at some point this summer.

A junior this season for the Cardinals, Ray may be the only true five-tool position player of this year’s draft class. He is good enough at fielding to manage center while being a threat on the base paths and showing above-average power from the left side. That being said, the 21-year old has an aggressive approach at the plate.

Between the rankings from BA and MLB.com, Ray is the consensus second-best outfield prospect behind Mercer's Kyle Lewis. As the sixth- (MLB) and seventh-highest (BA) ranked player in the draft, Ray seems to lack some high-ceiling profiling. However, his toolsy high floor is thought to be why he grabbed a spot in the top 10.
