Dodgers select Gavin Lux with 20th overall pick

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

With the 20th overall pick in the draft, the Dodgers have selected shortstop Gavin Lux from Indian Trail Academy in Wisconsin. Prior to the draft, Lux was slated to go 13th overall to the Rays by both ESPN and Baseball America. On the other hand, MLB.com had Lux pegged for the White Sox at 26th overall, so he landed right in the middle.

Lux joins Corey Seager as the Dodgers' top two infield options for the future, as the team is loaded with pitching within its top ten picks. If Seager is still with the Dodgers if and when Lux makes the majors, the latter could shift to second base.

The Arizona State-commit is one of the top shortstops in this year's draft. At 6'2", 175lbs, the left-handed hitting Lux still needs to fill-out, however, his athleticism already makes him an above average fielder and runner. While his strength could still develop, Lux's bat speed already shows good pop for his size.

Heading into the draft, first shortstop off of the board was believed to be between Lux and Delvin Perez. Lux is ranked as the 33rd-best overall prospect in this year's draft class by MLB.com while Baseball America has him at 36th. With Perez in somewhat of a freefall, Lux's stock may have correspondingly moved upward.
