The Rangers and Brewers have discussed trade scenarios involving Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy and reliever Will Smith, according to a major-league source. The sides appear to be far apart in talks.
Texas is known to be looking for upgrades across the board, and are involved in talks around the league regarding starting pitching, bullpen help and catchers. The Rangers had some interest in lefty Drew Pomeranz before he was dealt from the Padres to the Red Sox on Thursday.
Milwaukee is open for business, and is said to be willing to move anyone “for the right price.” Along with Lucroy and Smith, the team has valuable trade chips in outfielder Ryan Braun and closer Jeremy Jeffress, who drew interest from the Marlins before Miami made a deal for Fernando Rodney.
As Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported recently, the Rangers’ minor-league affiliates are being heavily scouted with less than three weeks before the trade deadline. Texas is expected to be aggressive before August 1.
