Diamondbacks place Zack Greinke on 15-day disabled list

Arizona placed Zack Greinke on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, the club announced Sunday afternoon.

Greinke, who the Diamondbacks signed to a $206 million deal, last started Tuesday against the Phillies but was removed after two innings as a result of the injury.

Before going down, Greinke, 32, pitched to a 3.62 ERA and 3.50 FIP over 109.1 innings. While he struggled during his first few starts, Greinke has posted 2.58 ERA over his last 11 outings.

The Diamondbacks have been plagued by injuries, with Rubby De La Rosa, A.J. Pollock, Chris Owings, Socrates Brito and David Peralta all currently on the disabled list. Arizona is seven and a half games back in the National League Wild Card standings and trying to gain ground ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline.

Diamondbacks Manager Chip Hale told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert the team is expecting Greinke to return shortly after the All-Star break, which means he shouldn’t be out for an extended period.

Greinke’s injury might force the Diamondbacks to reconsider potential trades. Robbie Ray and Patrick Corbin are reportedly drawing a notable amount of interest and could be moved. However, Greinke’s injury could result in Arizona keeping both young lefties on its roster.

Outfielder Rickie Weeks Jr. was reinstated from the bereavement list in the corresponding roster move.
