UPDATE: Jonathan Lucroy vetoes trade to Indians

UPDATE — After the Brewers and Indians reportedly agreed on a deal involving catcher Jonathan Lucroy, the veteran catcher has vetoed a trade to Cleveland, according to Tom Haudricourt of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Lucroy’s contract includes a no-trade clause, and the Indians were one of the teams on his no-trade list. As of Saturday night, Lucroy was expected to waive the no-trade clause.

ORIGINAL — The Brewers and Indians have agreed on a trade that will send catcher Jonathan Lucroy going to Cleveland for a four-prospect package that includes catcher Francisco Mejia, shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang and outfielder Greg Allen, as first reported by FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. Lucroy, who has a limited no-trade clause that includes the Indians, still has to approve the trade.

Jeff Passan reported shortly before Rosenthal’s confirmation that the Brewers were closing in on a deal, with the Mets and the Rangers being out while the Indians were the favorites. It appears now that the Indians are the victors.

The Indians were dealt a blow to their lineup when catcher Yan Gomes was placed on the disabled list with a separated shoulder on July 18. Currently, the Indians have Roberto Perez and Chris Gimenez as their catchers. Lucroy is hitting .300/.360/.484 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI on the season and would be an upgrade at the position and a more than able and adequate replacement while Gomes is out. The Indians are leading the AL Central and are 4.5 games up on the Tigers.

Lucroy’s contract is up at the end of the season, though he has an option for 2017. He was signed to a modest 5-year, $11 million extension in 2012, and is under control for $5.25 million next season.

The haul for Lucroy appears to be significant, according to MLB.com. In Cleveland’s system, Mejia is ranked as the 6th-best prospect, Cheng ranks as the 12th-best prospect, and Allen ranks as the 22nd-ranked prospect.
