Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reported that the Mets are the favorites to acquire Jay Bruce at the deadline, while the Rangers and the Giants remain in contention for Bruce. Our Chris Cotillo confirms that the Mets are a finalist, and that San Francisco is a “long shot” to land the outfielder.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Mets and the Reds have made progress on a deal. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reported that the best offer for Bruce from the Mets, Giants, and Rangers will nab Bruce.

Though the Mets have an outfield that consists of Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto, and Curtis Granderson, adding a bat like Bruce’s to the lineup would help them in the race for the NL East, where they are currently in third place and 6.5 games back of the division lead.

The Giants have Hunter Pence back in the outfield after a long stint on the DL, but having Bruce in a currently offense-thin outfield—one that has Denard Span and Angel Pagan regularly starting—would presumably help them keep their NL West lead.

The Rangers have Jurickson Profar, Nomar Mazara, and Ian Desmond in the outfield. Acquiring Bruce to bolster their outfield depth would help the team offensively and defensively. Texas is expected to make a major move before the 4 p.m. deadline, according to reports.
