The Red Sox have acquired left-hander Fernando Abad from the Twins in exchange for right-hander Pat Light, according to a major-league source. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports was first to report the deal.
Abad is the fourth addition of the month for the Red Sox, who already acquired Aaron Hill, Brad Ziegler and Drew Pomeranz this month. Boston was known to be looking for bullpen help in advance of the deadline, and will get a low-cost arm in Abad.
Abad, 30, has posted a 2.65 ERA in 34 innings out of the Twins bullpen this year and drew strong trade interest from many clubs searching for left-handed relief help. He will join southpaws Tommy Layne and Robbie Ross Jr. as lefties in the Red Sox’ bullpen.
Abad is the second Twin to get traded this week, joining infielder Eduardo Nunez, who was dealt to the Giants. Minnesota is expected to aggressively sell some pieces before the deadline.
Light, 25, is ranked by MLB.com as the 14th-best prospect in a deep Red Sox system and made his major-league debut for the Club this season. The former first-round pick (2012) has posted a 2.32 ERA in 31 innings out of the bullpen at Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
