Logan Morrison ‘probably done for the year’

The Rays’ first baseman is headed for an MRI on his left wrist.

It appears as though the Tampa Bay Rays will be without their first baseman, Logan Morrison, for the remainder of the season. During Sunday’s game, Morrison heard a pop in his left wrist and is scheduled for an MRI.

Morrison himself isn’t especially optimistic on the matter though, quoted by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:

“More than likely, I'm probably done for the year. I'm just hoping everything is all right.”

While optimism doesn’t seem plentiful, there is some hope in that quote from Morrison. In a September with no postseason implications for the Rays, resting a lingering injury isn’t the worst thing. However, an MRI could discover structural damage that may require surgery. If the diagnosis ends up heading that direction, the recovery could cut into Morrison’s 2017 season.

As an impending free agent, that could be somewhat worrisome for the Morrison camp and for teams looking to invest in his services. Morrison has slashed .238/.319/.414 in 398 plate appearances, which works out to about league average production at the plate by wRC+.

Morrison earned $4.2 million from the Rays this season for just above replacement level production. By FanGraphs’ $/WAR estimations, Morrison has been worth $3.6 million this season. The 29-year old lefty will almost certainly earn a roster spot by virtue of hitting from the left side of the plate.

That being said, his splits don’t indicate any specific acumen for hitting righties that much better than lefties. In fact, in 2016, Morrison boasted reverse splits though only had 71 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers. He hit right-handed pitching at a league average rate in his other 327 plate appearances.
