Red Sox catching prospect Daniel Flores tragically passed away Wednesday due to complications from cancer, team president/CEO Sam Kennedy told Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Flores was 17.
Boston signed Flores for $3.1 million out of Venezuela this summer and he was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 5th-best prospect in the Sox’ system as of the end of the season. He was regarded as one of the best catching prospects in baseball.
Flores’ death comes just one day after another tragedy in the baseball community, as former Blue Jays and Phillies great Roy Halladay died in a plane crash Tuesday. MLB Daily Dish sends its sincere condolences to the families of both Flores and Halladay.
