The Rays have agreed to re-sign first baseman Logan Morrison to a one-year, $2.5 million deal, as first reported by Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan. Per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, the contract includes about $1 million in incentives.
Tampa Bay was known to be interested in offensive upgrades this winter, and was linked to Mike Napoli and Chris Carter before coming to terms with Morrison. The deal with Morrison (along with the agreement with Rickie Weeks) does not necessarily take the Rays out of the market for those players, though it does represent a lessening of their chances considering the club’s limited resources.
Morrison, 29, was always considered a strong candidate to return to the Rays after hitting .238/.319/.414 with 14 homers and 43 RBI in his first season with the club. He is a veteran of seven major-league seasons with the Marlins (2010-13), Mariners (2014) and Rays (2015-16), owning a career .245/.325/.416 line with 84 homers in that span.
