The Nationals placed catcher Derek Norris on waivers Saturday, according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman.
Norris essentially lost a spot on Washington’s roster as a result of the club’s decision to sign free agent backstop Matt Wieters.
Norris is slated to make about $4.2 million and it could be difficult to trade him because of it. The Nationals are only responsible for Norris’ termination pay, according to Heyman.
The Goddard, Kansas, native has already hit two home runs this spring, but the Nationals seemingly haven’t had much success trading him.
Over 125 games with the Padres last season, Norris hit .186/.255/.328 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs.
Though Norris is just a career .233 hitter, there is a chance a team could value him as a backup catching option. However, the Nationals might be forced to take on part of his salary if they want to complete a trade before the season begins.
