Padres sign Cuban lefty Osvaldo Hernandez for $2.5 million. The 6-foot 18-year old joins five other Cuban free agents that A.J. Preller has signed during the international signing period. Not only does he throw hard for his age, but Hernandez has exhibited impressive control of the ball. It’ll be exciting to watch him find his footing in the Padres organization.

Here’s what else is going on in the National League West:

Turns out, Matt Cain might not get the fifth starter gig with the Giants after all.

Padres prospect Jose Castillo stole the show at the World Baseball Classic for Team Venezuela.

Tom Murphy is expected to be back with the Rockies in April.

Outsports and One Colorado host Pride Night at Colorado Rockies June 16.

Clayton Kershaw is already predicted to win the 2017 NL Cy Young and the season hasn’t even started yet. Imagine being that good at something?

Yasmany Tomas has a strained oblique and could miss Opening Day.

Jeff Samardzija is the most predictable pitcher in baseball and does that really have to be a bad thing?

Alex Dickerson has a bad disk in his back, so that’s not a good sign for next season.

We’re seeing the Dodgers starting line up fall into place.

Diamondbacks option LHP Anthony Banda, RHP Jimmie Sherfy to AAA Reno and really clean out their spring training roster.

Hey Giants fans...you know Eduardo Nunez is still on your team, right?

Remember how Ian Desmond broke his a little while back? He should be good to go for Colorado in April. Sigh.

Non-roster invite Bobby Wilson could be the catching prospect the Dodgers need in the next two years.
