Tigers trade rumors: Detroit trying to shop Mike Pelfrey

The Tigers are willing to eat Pelfrey’s salary in order to move him in a trade.

The Detroit Free Press’ Anthony Fenech reports the Tigers “contacted at least one team” trying to trade right-hander Mike Pelfrey. Additionally, Detroit is said to be willing to eat the entirety of Pelfrey’s $8 million salary to make him disappear.

Entering the second year of a two-year pact, Pelfrey was horrific his first season in Detroit, making 22 starts and going 4-10 with a 5.07 ERA. He pitched 109 innings but struck out just 56 batters to 46 walks and served up 15 home runs.

Booted from the rotation, the Tigers don’t even appear interested in keeping Pelfrey around as long relief. Fellow veteran righty Anibal Sanchez figures to handle that role after losing out to Matt Boyd for the fifth spot in the rotation. It’s doubtful the Tigers find any takers for Pelfrey. They’ll likely end up releasing him in the near future.
