Royals rumors: Lorenzo Cain open to extension with Kansas City

Cain will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain is open to discussing an extension with the club, adding he is interested in remaining in Kansas City long-term, according to MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan.

Kansas City is reportedly interested in extending impending free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, but Cain, Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas, who are all set to become free agents next winter, have seemingly not been approached about new contracts.

Cain, 30, has been named to the All-Star team once in his six seasons with the Royals, but he proved to be a productive bat in Kansas City’s lineup. He had success last season, hitting .287/.339/.408 with nine home runs and 56 RBIs over 103 games.

Cain missed a significant amount of time toward the end of the season as a result of a wrist injury, but it seems he is healthy this spring, according to Flanagan. While Cain might be seeking a longer-term deal, the Royals might be open to re-signing him to a two or three-year contract at the end of the season. If not, he might emerge as a trade candidate over the summer.
