Nationals infielder Stephen Drew injured his hamstring in Tuesday’s win over the Cardinals and was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday.
Drew was hurt exiting the batter’s box on a groundout in the fifth inning. With Trea Turner also on the DL nursing a hamstring injury, the Nationals’ middle infield depth is being put to a test. Daniel Murphy has second base locked down, and Wilmer Difo figures to take over as the starting shortstop while Turner and Drew are out.
34-year-old Drew started the season 4-for-18 at the plate with a double, four RBI, and three runs scored. Washington purchased the contract of infielder-outfielder Grant Green from Triple-A Syracuse to take Drew’s spot on the roster.
