Astros’ Correa not ruling out possible contract extension

MLB: Kansas City Royals at Houston Astros Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Astros star shortstop Carlos Correa is not ruling out signing a potential early multiyear extension with the team, according to Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle.

Correa told Kaplan his feelings on the situation Friday, a day after his agent Greg Genske said in a story by Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports that "Carlos is never going to do an (early) multiyear contract." The 22-year-old Correa, who is not a free agent until 2022, said that a deal can be done if it is for the right amount of money and it is before he hits arbitration in 2019.

"I'm not shutting the door," Correa said in Kaplan’s report. "The price has got be right, you know what I mean? And it's got to be early. Once I get to arbitration there's no turning back."

Right now, it appears Correa doesn’t have the incentive to do a long-term deal. He received a $4.8 million bonus when he signed with Houston as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He also has endorsement deals with Adidas, Topps and Blast Motion.

Correa has been a big bat for the Astros since his rookie season in 2015. He slashed .279/.345/.512 while smacking 22 home runs and driving in 68 runs in 99 games en route to earning AL Rookie of the Year honors. In 2016, he only had 20 homers in 156 games, but had 96 RBI and 36 doubles.

This season, he has only been hitting .250/.306/.318 in 11 games. He only has one extra-base hit this year, as hit a homer on Opening Day.
