The Cardinals have optioned outfielder Randal Grichuk to High-A Palm Beach, according to general manager John Mozeliak (via David Solomon). Grichuk will work on pitch recognition in the minors.
Grichuk, who turns 26 in August, has struggled to a .222/.276/.377 line with four homers in 46 games for St. Louis this season, striking out 54 times while walking on only 12 occasions. He struggled to a .240/.289/.480 line last year but did hit 24 homers for the Cards.
St. Louis will likely move forward with Tommy Pham, Dexter Fowler and Stephen Piscotty as its starting outfield, with Jose Martinez, who was called up in Grichuk’s place, seeing time as well. Grichuk is likely to rejoin the club later on in the season, his fourth in the majors.
