MLB Draft 2017: Rays select Brendan McKay with fourth overall pick

With the fourth overall pick in the draft, the Rays have selected first baseman/outfielder Brendan McKay from the University of Louisville. In mock drafts, McKay was projected to go first overall by ESPN, MLB.com, and Baseball America, though the Twins chose prep shortstop Royce Lewis with that pick in a bit of a surprise.

A Darlington, Pennsylvania native, McKay has shown how dynamic of a player he has been — and can be in the big leagues — after being regarded as the best two-player the last three seasons in college baseball and establishing himself as one of best college players of all-time. The 21-year-old McKay is a 6-foot-2, 212-pound left-hander and first baseman who has superb control of his pitches and can hit for both average and power. While most scouts had been split as to which position McKay is better fit for, McKay wants to try to be a two-way guy, something baseball has not had in its modern history.
