Marlins top prospect Braxton Garrett will undergo Tommy John surgery after tearing the UCL in his pitching arm, per Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. The southpaw will miss the rest of the year.
Garrett, who turns 20 in August, was the seventh overall pick in last year’s draft out of Florence High School in Alabama. He is the second big-time Marlins pitching prospect to undergo the procedure, joining former no. 2 overall pick Tyler Kolek.
Garrett made four starts for Single-A Greensboro in his pro debut this year, posting a 2.93 ERA in 15.1 innings. He is currently ranked (by MLB.com) as the top prospect in a shallow Marlins system, with Kolek coming in second.
