Veteran right-hander Jake Peavy plans to pitch again in the big leagues and could return this season, he told Alex Speier of the Boston Globe:
Peavy, now 36, received interest from clubs over the winter but elected not to sign due to personal issues including a divorce and legal proceedings from an investment scam, as ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reported in March. He could sign with a club at some point this summer, and is more interested in signing with a postseason contender.
Peavy spent last season with the Giants, pitching to a 5.54 ERA in 31 starts (21 appearances) in his 15th major-league season. The 2-time World Series champion (2013, 2014) and NL Cy Young winner (2007) owns a career 40.1-WAR over that span with the Padres, White Sox, Red Sox and Giants.
Peavy drew interest from San Diego over the winter, and one would think the Padres are still an option if Peavy considers signing with a non-contender. San Diego has dealt with rotation struggles all season and could use a veteran arm to eat innings while younger pitchers develop.
