ORIGINAL (Wednesday): The Mariners are close to trading for a relief pitcher, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

The identity of the pitcher isn’t known, though Feinsand later added that Seattle had been working on a deal for Marlins righty David Phelps. It is not yet confirmed that Phelps is the reliever involved in the pending deal.

In potentially related news, Mariners prospect Christopher Torres was a late scratch for Lo-A Everett tonight. Torres, a defense-first shortstop, is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the 15th-best prospect in Seattle’s system. The reason for his scratch is unknown.

At this point, all we truly know is that, according to Feinsand, the M’s are on the verge of adding a bullpen piece. It might be Phelps, or someone else. Torres may be involved. Maybe not. It’s 3 a.m. on the east coast and no one is responding to texts.

Stay tuned for more on this tomorrow.
