MLB trade rumors: Brewers ‘fading’ in talks for Athletics’ Sonny Gray

Milwaukee appeared to be a strong suitor but appears to be falling behind its competitors.

The Brewers are “fading” in talks for Athletics pitcher Sonny Gray, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Gray is likely to be dealt before Monday’s trade deadline and has been consistently linked to the Brewers, Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Cubs and Braves since hitting the market. Milwaukee was thought to be one of the favorites to land him due to the club’s deep farm system, but Rosenthal’s report suggests another suitor has emerged as a stronger option.

Oakland’s talks with Houston were said to be “heating up” last week, though later reports indicated that the sides were not getting serious. The Yankees have reportedly received the price they must pay in a deal for Gray, with the Braves, Cubs and Dodgers (and potentially others) lurking in the background.

Milwaukee has been linked to a few different starters on the trade market, though they lost a potential option Monday when Jaime Garcia was dealt from Atlanta to Minnesota. General manager David Stearns is likely to look for controllable pieces, as the club is at what appears to be the beginning of their window of contention.
