Yankees, Athletics ‘making progress’ on Sonny Gray, Yonder Alonso trade

UPDATE (Wednesday): FanRag’s Jon Heyman reports that both the Brewers and Braves have fallen behind in talks for Gray, seeming to help the Yankees’ chances of getting a deal done. He cautions that nothing is close or done between the two clubs, adding that multiple teams are involved.

The Astros, Mariners, Nationals and Dodgers are all thought to have some level of interest in Gray in addition to New York, Milwaukee and Atlanta. A deal could go down by the end of the week.

ORIGINAL: The Yankees and Athletics are “making progress” on a deal that would send righty Sonny Gray and first baseman Yonder Alonso to New York, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Gray is starting for Oakland against the Blue Jays tonight, so a deal does not appear imminent as of this evening.

New York has been discussing a deal with the A’s for both Gray and Alonso for days, with MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reporting earlier today that Oakland had specific interest in outfield prospect Estevan Florial. The Yankees would likely have to give up a major haul of prospects in a package deal for both Gray and Alonso, though the other pieces that have been discussed are not known.

The Yankees are one of many teams who have been involved in Gray, the top controllable starter available on the trade market. He is under team control for two seasons after this one and has drawn interest from the Cubs, Astros, Dodgers, Brewers and Braves.

Alonso, an All-Star this year, is a free agent after the season. New York already made one major trade, acquiring Todd Frazier, David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle from the White Sox for four players last week.
