The St. Louis Cardinals are still in pursuit of free agent Eric Hosmer, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
The Cardinals have been rumored to be in the mix for Hosmer for weeks, but nothing has escalated as the free agent market remains relatively untapped.
Matt Carpenter is a solid corner infielder in St. Louis, but his ability to play multiple positions could make room for Hosmer should the Cardinals sign him. Morosi also reports the Cardinals in the hunt for Josh Donaldson, as they continue to search for offensive help after finishing in the middle of the pack last season in most offensive categories.
Hosmer would help the Cardinals at the plate, as he is coming off a career-high .318 batting average and .882 OPS last season, and played in all 162 games. Hosmer also hit 25 home runs for the second straight season.
The market for free agent bats has been quiet so far this winter, so the cost for Hosmer remains unclear for the time being, while almost all of the top available bats remain unsigned.
