The Giants are bringing outfielder Gregor Blanco back, according to an Instagram post by the outfielder. SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo was the first to report that the agreement was a minor-league deal.
Blanco, 34, spent five seasons with the club from 2012-2016 before playing the 2017 season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 90 games, the light-hitting outfielder slashed .246/.337/.357 with three home runs, 15 doubles, and three triples to go along with 15 stolen bases.
Blanco has spent the better part of his career being a serviceable fourth outfielder. His ability to play all three outfield positions has increased his value during his career, but he will struggle to find a spot on this season’s Giants club.
Blanco will compete to be a part of a Giants outfield that has recently acquired both Andrew McCutchen and Austin Jackson, so he will have his work cut out for him if he expects to make the big league roster and get playing time. For now, this is a low-risk deal for GM Bobby Evans and the Giants to bring a familiar face back to San Fran.
