• Reds closer Raisel Iglesias has a lot of things to be thankful for, and one of them is a new three-year contract that he and Cincinnati just agreed Wednesday. The young star will make $24.125 million and will avoid arbitration in the process.
• The trade rumors for Noah Syndergaard are catching fire right now, as six teams are reportedly ‘real players’ for the Mets starter.
- 39-year-old third baseman and likely future Hall of Famer Adrian Beltre called it a career on Tuesday after 21 big-league seasons. It wasn’t a surprise considering the on-field tributes in both Arlington and Seattle that Beltre participated in at the end of last season, but it’s still sad news for baseball fans everywhere. As our Eric Cole writes, the game just won’t be the same without the always-consistent hitter and skilled fielder who can’t stand having his head touched.
- In a transaction that sounds much more inhumane than it actually is, the Padres are selling third baseman Christian Villanueva to Japan’s Yomiuri Giants. Hitters coming off 20-homer rookie seasons clearly aren’t as valuable as they used to be.
- According to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners and Padres have discussed a potential deal — one that doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense for either club — that would send infielder Jean Segura and pitcher Mike Leake to San Diego in exchange for man-without-a-position Wil Myers.
- The Red Sox found a potential low-cost bullpen contributor on Tuesday, acquiring 26-year-old righty reliever Colten Brewer from the Padres in exchange for minor-league infielder Esteban Quiroz.
- The Yankees have long been targeting starting pitching, especially this offseason. It appears that they have gotten their man (although he may not be the only starter they grab this offseason) as they acquired James Paxton from the Mariners in a deal that sent their top pitching prospect, Justus Sheffield, and two other prospects to Seattle.
- With the J.T. Realmuto sweepstakes seemingly out of their reach since the Marlins won’t make a deal within their division because....reasons, the Nationals moved on and grabbed Kurt Suzuki off the free agent market on a two-year deal.
- The Philadelphia Phillies have several areas of need and a bunch of money to spend. Here is a look at what one can expect from them this offseason.
- The Red Sox have re-signed Steve Pearce to a one-year deal. The 35-year-old reigning World Series MVP will make $6.25M in his 13th year in the big leagues.
- The Rangers clearly are making a commitment to improving their defense behind the plate, as they’ve agreed to a two-year deal with catcher Jeff Mathis.
- The Blue Jays have acquired LHP Trent Thornton from the Astros in exchange for utility infielder Aledmys Diaz. It’s one of those nice deals that wraps everything up with a bow: the Blue Jays add to their pitching depth, the Astros find a potential Marwin Gonzalez replacement, and everyone goes home happy. Well, I guess we’ll see about that when the season starts.
- The hot stove season is finally starting to heat up a bit as the Indians and Pirates completed a five-player deal that essentially moved around some formerly highly-regarded prospects that no longer really had a place in their parent organizations. Hopefully this is a sign that we will start getting some moves here soon, especially with awards season being over.
- The Orioles made a surprisingly decent personnel decision, hiring Mike Elias away from the Astros to run their baseball operations department. Whether or not Baltimore’s ownership will actually let him run things as they should be run is to be determined, but the bigger story this offseason may be just how much talent the Astros have lost from their front office.
- The Padres apparently think they can get Noah Syndergaard. In the immortal words of Cher from Clueless, “As if.”
- Twins catcher Joe Mauer announced his retirement after 15 years of good, wholesome baseball.
- The women of SB Nation’s MLB team brands look back at the 2018 season.
- Cleveland will listen to offers for veteran players, and the internet has subsequently spiraled into a rabbit hole of “what ifs.”
- Winter is here...and with it, hot stove season. Here’s a look at the biggest free agents this offseason and what we might see go down when baseball hits the Winter Meetings in Vegas.
