We have all come to know some of the greatest players in baseball. Mike Trout is widely considered to be the best player of the last decade or so. Aaron Judge is appointment-level television as he launches bombs out of....well, pretty much everywhere. Bryce Harper is a polarizing figure, but there is no doubt that he grabs the public’s attention. Clayton Kershaw is one of the best pitchers the league has seen in a long time. Those are just a few examples but you get the gist.
However, there are several players that have been incredibly good at what they do, but do not get the same fanfare. Jose Ramirez has been incredible for the Indians for the last couple of seasons and he has already put up 3.7 fWAR through 52 games, but casual baseball fans would struggle to pick him out of a lineup. The Braves’ Freddie Freeman has been one of the best hitters in baseball the last few years, but being on a rebuilding club has diminished his profile no matter what numbers he puts up. Odubel Herrera is in a similar boat with Freddie....been quietly excellent on teams that were not so quietly not excellent.
It hasn’t been just hitters that have been overlooked. While Noah Syndergaard gets the Cy Young predictions and highlight clips with his unbelievable stuff, Jacob deGrom has posted 3.2 fWAR or higher every year since 2014. Corey Kluber understandably gets a lot of the love in the Indians rotation, but Carlos Carrasco put up 5.5 fWAR and even after a slower start this year is still sitting on 1.2 fWAR through his first 11 starts.
So for today’s poll, who is the most underrated star in major league baseball. If we forgot somebody, let us know down below in the comments section.
