Cardinals likely to activate Carlos Martinez and Yadier Molina on Tuesday, per report

The Cardinals have some help on the way in the help of two of their best players coming off the disabled list

The Cardinals have had some tough luck on the injury front this year. Starting pitcher Alex Reyes started off the season on the disabled list and made just one start before having to go right back on the DL. Meanwhile, pitcher Carlos Martinez, who had been lights out for the Cardinals with a 1.62 ERA and 3.36 FIP in 2018 and was thought to be the team’s best pitcher, went on the DL with a right lat strain. Yadier Molina, the team’s long-time catcher and among the best in the league when he is healthy, has also been on the mend after taking a 102+ mph foul tip in a very unfortunate place in an incident that many just choose to block from their memories.

Despite the injuries, the Cardinals have hung around in the NL Central race even as the Brewers have gotten hot. They are currently 4.5 games back and six games above .500. Now, it looks like they are starting to get healthy again.

Assuming both are actually healthy and stay that way, which is no certainty if the history of players coming back from the DL this season is any indicator, this will bolster a St. Louis roster that needs a boost. While the Cardinals have done reasonably well without them, the team is 5-5 over their last 10 games and with the Cubs and Brewers surging, they will need all the help they can get to keep pace.

Before going on the DL with a traumatic pelvic hematoma (ow), Molina had slashed .272/.292/.456 with six home runs in 2018.
