The trade market this year has been any interesting one in that it has formed almost exclusively around players who will be free agents after this season. "Rentals" are a time-honored tradition this time of year because they are usually not too cost prohibitive, but it has been interesting to see the relative lack of discussion of guys with some team control.
Case in point: the market for J.A. Happ's services. While the market for Manny Machado was a fierce one, one of the more desireable rentals on the market has been Happ as he has been a steady source of production on the mound for the Blue Jays....and it doesn't hurt that he throws with his left arm.
It appears as though the Blue Jays feel like they have shopped him around enough and will send him to a new home soon.
Blue Jays are making clear their intention is to trade Happ before his scheduled Saturday start. Yanks believed to be in good position but jays have other teams (and yankees are talking to other teams about other pitchers as well)— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 26, 2018
According to Heyman's report, Toronto wants to have a deal in place before Saturday. The Blue Jays are likely doing this for a number of reasons including increasing his value a little bit (gives him one more start he can throw with his new team), prevents other teams from finding other options which could drive down demand for Happ, and just for general "we just need this to be done" reasons.
