With the 2nd pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Royals selected shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. out of Colleyville Heritage High School. Throughout the pre-draft process and coverage, there were few players that were even in contention for the #1 overall selection. While Rutschman was the heavy favorite, Witt had his fair share of believers as well given the tool set he brings to the table as a very capable defensive shortstop with an offensive game that has as high a ceiling as anyone in the draft. The Royals had long been connected to Witt Jr. and they did not disappoint.
A plus runner with at least plus raw power, Witt should be able to impact games on a multitude of levels not just with the highlight reel home runs and defensive plays, but as a baserunner as well. At a listed 6’1 and 183 pounds, he could maintain his current frame and be an offensive force or he could put on some more muscle and not lose too much quickness in the process. It also helps that Witt is arguably the best defensive shortstops in the class with a strong throwing arm, good range, and smooth actions on balls to both sides. Something that has been a constant this spring has been scouts raving about his make-up and work ethic which will serve him well as he adjusts to life as a professional.

While Bobby Witt Jr. prepares for his high school prom & state championship run, he's also on the cusp of being one of the top picks in the 2019 #MLBDraft. pic.twitter.com/UpDLtKSVa1
If there are downsides to Witt, they exist in his hit tool and his age. Witt did show a decent amount swing and miss during the summer showcases last year which did raise a few red flags, although he has been much better this spring. There is also the question of his age as he will be 19 on draft day which does ding his profile amongst teams that used analytical models to project potential draftees. Those quibbles are honestly pretty minor, though, as most throughout the prospect industry have had him in the top three prospects in this draft for quite a while.
