With the 18th pick in the draft, the Pirates have selected right handed pitcher Quinn Priester from Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Illinois. In mock drafts, Priester was mocked 21st overall to the Atlanta Braves by both ESPN and Baseball America. Priester is raw, but has a fascinating ceiling given his lack of professional instruction.

Some consider Priester to be the top prep pitcher in this draft class, as he’s a cold weather arm that has taught himself how to pitch without much coaching. There is thought that moving to a pro organization with professional coaching, as well as filling in his projectable body, could help him take off.

Priester, who is 6’3”, 190 pounds, already throws up to 96 MPH with his fastball, has a curve that flashes as a second plus pitch, and also offers the makings of a change. Priester is already a strike thrower with the stuff to make an impact as a pro, making the TCU commitment very highly regarded.
